Rainbow over the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse at Sunset on Lake Michigan in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin
For more than thirty years Daniel Dempster has roamed the backroads and wild places of America seeking out and capturing the beauty of this wonderful land. Whether he is photographing the powerful thoroughbreds of Kentucky as they thunder down the stretch at Churchill Downs or roaming a stark and rugged Maine coastline searching for the perfect combination of composition and light, he is at home with a camera in his hand. What started as a passionate hobby in 1980 soon blossomed into a full-time career. In 1988 Daniel had four images featured in the Kentucky Derby Museum. Work with the horse racing industry soon followed and in 1990 he was asked to be official photographer for the Kentucky Derby Festival. He held that position...

I'm less than a week old on FAA and haven't posted much...but working on it. Here's a link to a post on my photo blog showing my only rainbow near a lighthouse - this one is at Algoma. http://popsdigital.com/?p=1271
Daniel Dempster replied:
Very nice shot and very vivid. It is beautiful in your neck of the woods. I've always wanted to visit Washington and Rock Islands at the tip of Door County. Enjoy FAA. I've been a member since last summer and have made a number of sales though I don't think I'll get rich off of it anytime soon.

I'd be kicking myself big time if I knew I had missed this.
Daniel Dempster replied:
I was teaching another workshop up there with a good friend of mine from Tennessee a few years ago and we were in Kewaunee when a storm came up as night was falling. There is a small park on the water with a shelter which gives a bit more distant view of the lighthouse. We took shelter there and I then told the group how to get lightning shots. Again, everyone was tired and just wanted to go back to the hotel. I don't think they knew what a great opportunity it was. We packed up and left. It about killed me. I have a rainbow shot over Lake Michigan on FAA that was taken between Algoma and Kewaunee. I was working on my book Lighthouses of the Great Lakes and was on my way home after being on the road for three weeks. A storm broke as the sun was setting. I was torn between trying to get the rainbow over one of the lights or just shooting it where I was. I decided the rainbow would fade before I could get to either lighthouse so I found a decent spot and shot it. It turned out very nice.

Daniel - this is a great image! I live a couple of miles from Kewaunee and have taken a bunch of this lighthouse...but haven't caught a rainbow there...yet. Your description says this in in Algoma County. Actually, it is Kewaunee County. Kewaunee is the county seat. Algoma is the small town to the north - with another pier head lighthouse.
Daniel Dempster replied:
Thanks Bill for the compliment and the correction. I taught workshops in Door County for several years and this rainbow occurred one evening while I had the group out. It was a bit funny as we had been out most of the day and when we arrived to shoot the lighthouse it was spitting rain. The group was worn out so I gave them the option of going off to grab a bite to eat or to meet me at the lighthouse to shoot more images. Apparently they were pretty hungry as they all chose to eat instead. Almost immediately the sun popped out just as the sun was setting and I got this image. I teased them about it the next day but none of them believed me about the rainbow until I showed it to them. I think they might have learned a lesson. Good things happen if you are patient.
